The Marvel maybe? The last movie made 1 billion. But being sandwiched between the 2 Avengers movie definitely helped it.

Considering how big a hit the first two Hunger Games movies were—and how word of mouth is helping the hype, the upcoming prequel could be a big hit though. Also, the first Aquaman didn't make a billion for nothing, so let's see how the second one does soon too.

This week's Charts with Dan talks about Barbenheimer again, but also accounts for Sunday's National Cinema Day. Starting last year, many theaters in the United States and Canada (both big chains and indie art house places) massively discount ticket prices to $4 for any format before Labor Day. Films that saw a noticeable boost included Blue Beetle (2023) and Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem. Furthermore, Liam Neelson's Retribution (2023) and the sports drama The Hill also debut this weekend.

    • Warner Bros. was apparently "publicly angry" that Sony incorporated preview grosses for Gran Turismo into its debut total. WBD argued that Barbie would have won the weekend otherwise, and felt cheated. (6:23)
      • Dan notes that Warner Bros is no stranger to doing this tactic themselves, noting that Tenet's debut weekend also included preview grosses back in 2020, and WarnerMedia refusing to share the daily box office data for fact checking. (6:36)
      • Furthermore, Warner Bros overestimated (by $2 million) how much Barbie was predicted to do on the weekend anyway. Dan advises WBD to drink a tall glass of "Shut The Hell Up" for being greedy on how many records the news cycle needs to report on Barbie. (7:10)

Oppenheimer make it to 800 million worldwide? With Barbie now the highest grossing of the year, maybe that—along with its own merits—will help carry it to a billion. Look at Joker being the only R movie with a billion based on the name alone and how Jurassic World: Dominion made it there too despite a slow crawl.

Wonder how Deadpool 3 will do next year since the other two as far I know made 800 million each and Logan—let me look it up real quick—made over 600 million on its own merits too.

[up] Jurassic World Dominion wasn't rated R, it was PG-13 like every other film in the series.

[up]I know. It got off to a very slow start and still reached a billion is the point that I was making. For many people, Joker being rated R didn't matter and thus why it ended up as huge a hit as it was—thus what could also help Oppenheimer too.

Anyway per box office analyst Jatinder. Presales for first 24 hours of Taylor Swift Eras film biggest ever at $50m, Endgame was $45m.

I Feel we may have found th r biggest film of the year at the box office and it isn't even one people saw coming.

Because she released an enormous amount of content in the last 3 years, a lot of which are rerecord of her old music that made people reevaluate them beyond the pop singles. Adding that she literally won an Grammy for Album of the Year in 2020 and that album was pioneering of the lockdown music recording and it isn't hard to see why both the audience and the music industry is massively supporting her

Oppenheimer passed 900 million. A billion is becoming more and more realistic at this point.

Blue Beetle—my friend's night last night was cut short, so we missed it again—passed 100 million worldwide.

A theatrically-released Taylor Swift concert movie being a massive hit? Heh. That actually makes a lot of sense…

56% of BB’s box office is domestic, which seems… unusual. Foreign audiences care even less than American ones apparently.

Nah it makes sense. As a couple of people I talk to online Said. Latin America aren't going to que up for a story about the us Latino immigrant experience and BB is not a particularly well known property so Asia and europr anent going to go wild for it.

Now if the dceu had succeeded they could have made it profitable as people would have been interested lkke with the mcu and guardians. But that didn't happen.

The Flash is getting watched on Max and people like it, so it goes to show that Blue Beetle while not exactly killing it financially does have something to offer from what I can tell. Gonna see with both The Lost Kingdom and The Batman 2 whether or not the DC brand is totally diluted at the Box Office soon enough.

Mutant Mayhem passed The Flash domestically too at least by the way, so there you go. That's a movie apparently earning the love it deserves despite a lukewarm first weekend.

[up][up]Well that was different. That was a controversial CG retelling of a classic musical and this is…Taylor Swift in Concert. Be shocked if this didn't do better. Haha.
